Emma Jean`s in Walnut

Fantastic food in the middle of nowhere USA, in Walnut, Iowa. As far as I am concerned, this restaurant and their Philly Steak sandwich is the reason this dot is still on the map. If driving I-80, make this your stopping point. Get gas next door and come in and eat. Considering the hotel looks like it had recent fire damage, I won't recommend that, but this restaurant has my FULL RECOMMENDATION! Service is great, friendly, too. Just skip the potato salad. The Philly cheese steak sandwich more than made up for that. YUM!!!!

Stopped in on a Thursday night with my father after being on the road all day. Service was great and the roast beef and mashed potato dinner hit the spot. The prices all looked very reasonable. Hope we can stop in on our way back through.

Leave it over there 1 hour + before we even got her food besides waiting 15 minutes given get our order in. I found he asked another waitress for Bill you're two hours later so we could go to the motel and go to bed. Food was not good on top of it my wife's food was cold. I never not leave a tip but I did not leave one today good luck if you go there

Best little mom and pop restaurant in Iowa! Excellent food and service. Very nice and friendly staff including the owner and his daughter. Try the catfish and steak, both are amazingly delicious! We always stop for dinner when we are through!

Great place to stop for a delicious bite to eat on I80! The hot beef sandwich was oh so good! The portions and prices are also super awesome. Highly recommend if you're passing Walnut, IA

The food was sooo good & affordable. I had the pork chops with mash and everything tasted perfect. Our waitress was very sweet. I also had enough room to park my semi truck :). I will be back soon!

Had a wonderful meal here, great food and service. The owner was there and was also very friendly and nice even let us try huckleberry icecream which was amazing. Will definitely go back.

We enjoy making a trip to Walnut and eating here. Have tried the Ruben and fried pork cutlet, both were great, they have franks red-hot sauce (always a must have). Service is always friendly and professional.

We were only party in the room, but service slow nonetheless. Nice waitress, food was barely warm. Marginal quality. Got maybe a tablespoon of tartar sauce with my fish and chips meal. It was discolored and had an odd taste, so did not ask for more. On the brighter side, I was not ill the next day, which surprised me a little. One and done experience.

The noodles are homemade! Perfect comfort food at the end of a long road day (pairs nicely with a shot of Templeton Rye) :)

I can't say enough about this place. We were on a trip from des Moines area heading back to sioux city on 8/9/2020. We stopped by in a off chance something was open by the truck stop. Didn't realize what time it was and walked in realizing they had 5 minutes until close and the owner said to come in and sit down and have a meal. They still served us with a smile and very delicious food. The owner and waitress was very friendly and was willing to have a conversation. I highly recommend this place if your on that stretch of i80. Thank you again for allowing us a bit to eat at that time of night.

Casual restaurant immediately off I 80 in Walnut, Iowa. We stopped after a long day of driving and enjoyed both the food, atmosphere, and friendly service. There was a buffet set up that looked great but we ordered salads off the menu that were delicious. Bonus: chocolate cake with ice cream. Can't beat the prices!

The hot part of the buffet was not hot . The cornbeef and cabbage, green beans was cold ,but we also showed up at 7:30 and they close the buffet at 8 maybe that is why. The chicken was very good . I had the chicken and noodles very good but I would have liked to have more noodles. I will come back again but earlier. Priced well $$. Beer was kind $$$. Dinner on one side , bar on the other. Chicken tenders served hot & cripy, the vege beef soup was good, I would have liked fresh potatoes, the taco salad was served with fresh vege ingredients, the ground beef was not very. The fried chicken was fresh had it been fried in fresh oil.

Very good food. Go out of their way to accommodate preferences. Fast and friendly. Reasonably priced too. Will go again.

Yeah don’t go here. The end. Walnut needs a craft diner. Someone open it. It’s a zero for food.

Best food I've had from a cafe type restaurant ever. Great portions, amazing service and staff. Cozy temperature, environment, and just downright piping hot sandwiches and fries. Best onion rings ever. Will definitely eat here again anytime I have to go back and forth between Minnesota and Nebraska for appointments.

Emma Jean's is so Legendary and incredible that I simply cannot put into word's how much they mean to me. During a troubled trip to New Jersey in my 1982 Lebaron the owner helped me to try and fix what was going wrong with my car and you very simply do not come across such a loving and warm hearted open arm's type of place. Planning a trip to Iowa just to get Emma Jean's is something that will be in my future God willing. Best regards on this one. Top mark's. In addition to the family and homestyle service and feel, the food was simply phenomenal. There should be a ten star option for Emma Jean's. 1.

My husband, daughter (also named Emma Jean) and I stopped here on a whim traveling from Cedar Rapids to Omaha. We really didn't care about the restaurant itself. Just a photo OP for the name. We decided to go inside and eat. The service was SO friendly and inviting. The food was great and very comforting!

Don't bother unless you are starving to death. Even then...we regretted it. Still tipped well because it wasn't her fault the food sucked. Anyway, skip if I were you. No creamer only fake powdery stuff. Mashed potatoes tasted fake. Gravy tasted like cardboard. Coffee was awful. It appears their best thing going was anything fried. Though I had chicken fried steak and it was blegh. Diner be ware.

The food here is great, and the staff is great, and I mean great! Super nice...so if you are going antique shopping in Walnut hit this place up! The weekend buffet is great, prices are good and the beer is ICE COLD...also very family friendly. As I said if you are in Walnut gotta stop in! Highly suggest the buffet or prime rib...it is lean and tasty. The veggies are good too.

If you are traveling interstate 80 in Iowa don’t miss this place! Great food and service. Local owner put his whole heart into remodeling and the menus is diverse and homemade! Great buffet on weekends!

Ok food. Nothing too special. Patty melt wasn't so melty since it didn't have much cheese. Burger was dry.

Nice service. Looks family run. Over-priced .. 2 small salads with chicken $21.... Nothing much else in the area so happy to pay.

An absolute treasure! Everything there reminded me of home in Alabama. Fast service, food was delicious, dessert was great, and the staff was warm and welcoming. Their enthusiasm about this restaurant was everything.

Randomly came across this little gem while traveling on I-80 east. My name is Emma Jean, so, of course, I had to stop. Great food, GREAT service (ask for Chris! She rocks!) And a real down home atmosphere. I reccomend this place to everyone!

We stopped here as a group. There was a buffet and prime rib. Prime rib was great. Even the prime rib sandwich. The buffet was a standard buffet with chicken, fish, potatoes & salads. All in all - a great meal was enjoyed by all.
